Cessation of
DARE by Pekin Police Department and District 108
Talking Points
- Effective with the
2010-2011 school year, the D.A.R.E. program in Pekin will cease.
This is a mutual decision between the Pekin Police Department and
Pekin Public School District 108 and will extend into the parochial
schools as well. While this decision was not primarily driven by
funding issues, it does follow in the wake of the State’s
notification that it will no longer support DARE through local
funding as it has in the past.
- D.A.R.E. was developed
by the Los Angeles Police Department in 1983. The Pekin Police
Department’s DARE program started in 1987. It involves having a
police officer teach a curriculum from D.A.R.E. America to 5th
grade students in Pekin Schools.
- D.A.R.E. has been
overwhelmingly been found to be ineffective (see studies listed
below). Despite its ineffectiveness, D.A.R.E. has been a very
popular program including in Pekin.
- Pekin Public School
District 108 has developed an educational component to replace the
D.A.R.E. curriculum and Pekin Police officers will continue to
assist, visit, and otherwise be involved with Pekin’s children at
our schools.
- At a time of shrinking
resources, it is imperative that we utilize our officers
effectively. The officer previously assigned D.A.R.E. duties
performed it part-time during the school year. Those hours will be
transformed into more hours on the street.
